Seminars are attended by faculty, fellows, trainees, staff, and others with interests in aging from across the university. The broad goal of the COAH Scientific Seminar Series is to stimulate interdisciplinary research investigating the health concerns for an aging society, particularly focused on opportunities for prevention, through engaging leading experts in the discussion of research agendas and findings pertaining to the field. The Epidemiology and Biostatistics of Aging (EBA) Research in Progress Meetings take place on the 2nd and 4th Mondays, 3:30-4:30PM, during the academic year.

The bi-weekly EBA Research in Progress meetings involve trainees, faculty members and others in the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions interested in aging and health. The sessions serve to develop trainees’ critical thinking, oral communication skills and knowledge of issues integral to aging research and career development. Each trainee presents an annual formal seminar during his or her training period. These meetings provide a successful forum for students and faculty to report their research, learn methods for presentation of research, offer and receive research feedback, and discuss quantitative methods and prominent publications informally. The events are also a forum to generate collaborations across disciplines and projects have resulted in jointly authored manuscripts. These meetings also include information on general research skill development (how to develop a hypothesis, write an abstract, how to work with people in other disciplines, etc.) and career development (preparing for a career and looking for a job). EBA Training Program
Pepper Scholars Program Research in Progress Meetings
The JHU OAIC collaboration initiative, known as the Pepper Scholars Program, consists primarily of monthly research-in-progress sessions that allow for OAIC-supported investigator interaction and discourse, along with progress updates and access to mentors and methodological experts. The program’s research-in-progress centerpiece is bolstered by an online collaboration tool, an ongoing seminar series, grant review sessions, and research facilitation by the center administrator on this effort. The main goal of the Pepper Scholars Program is to positively affect collaborative behaviors and investigator productivity through interactive sessions and other mechanisms of communication and support.
Pepper Scholars Program meetings occur on first Wednesday of each month from 12:00-1:00pm via Zoom. Each session includes a 30-40 minute presentation by an OAIC-supported investigator, followed by discussion.

Research on Aging Showcase
The Research on Aging Showcase is an annual event to highlight aging-focused research by students, fellows, and junior faculty at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and the National Institute on Aging. First held in spring 2008, the showcase was created as a day-long student-led summit of research leaders and trainees that features a keynote lecture and a poster competition.
